Kara Kum Desert

Once covered by the sea, Kara Kum (Gara Gum) makes up 80–90% of the Republic of Turkmenistan. The desert possesses large reserves of oil, natural gas and deposits of Sulphur wherein Kara Kum translates to “Black Sand.” An excavation occurring 40 years ago accidentally created a large hole spewing out flames for what seems like eternity. Locals call it “The Door to Hell,” however this phenomenon continues to attract tourists and can be seen for miles.
